UPPER WHARFEDALE

This beautiful area typifies the Dales landscape of dry-stone walls, barns, river valleys, rock strewn moorland and flower-rich pasture. In the past, parts of the area were scarred with lead mining, now the landscape is pastoral with most of the land used for grazing livestock and growing grass for feeding the stock. Many of the farmers also support projects to preserve the traditional Dales landscape.

Several small villages have grown up along the river valleys. Some, such as Kettlewell, are large enough to include facilities for visitors such as shops, cafes and overnight accommodation as well as the schools, places of worship and other aspects of the communities that inhabit these picturesque and, sometimes, isolated areas.

The network of footpaths along the river and over the moors provides plenty of choice of walks for all levels of fitness. The roads offer a good variety of routes and gradients with plenty of tempting places to stop for refreshments.

Other activities include horse riding, fishing, caving, watersports and climbing.
